Day two of Project-Attempt-To-Drink-A-Normal-Amount-Of-Water.

I did pretty well – I managed to consume three full glasses of water during the day, with a wee bit of lime juice concentrate added for some flavour, because plain water gets sort of bleck after a while. I had a not-so-full glass of Tampico with my dinner.

These weren’t little glasses – they’re the tall sort, and I know they comfortably hold 355 mL of liquid with no ice in them, because I know I can empty a Coke can into there. If I add ice cubes, I can usually empty it and have a fullish glass, but sometimes it just won’t fit and I end up with a sip or two leftover in the can. With how full I filled the glass with water – I kept refilling the same glass – I’d guess I had about 1.5 L of water and/or Tampico today.

Hmph. I went down in consumption compared to yesterday. Not a good starting trend.

On a more positive note, though, I found a good habit to try and get into – just have the glass of water available and ready to go at all times. A lot of drinking just sort of happened as I was trying to work. When the glass was empty, I would promptly get up and refill it. I must try to keep this up.

One odd thing though – I’ve been thirstier today. What’s up with that? I drink nothing for ages and I’m fine, then I start trying to drink more and suddenly I’m thirsty. It’s as if I’ve suddenly set a switch in my brain to Notify when thirsty. I suppose it’s also a good thing that I’m more aware of my need for fluids, but this thirst was totally unexpected. I’m drinking more, not less. Shouldn’t I be less thirsty??

Just this morning, I was reaching for the salt and pepper shakers in the kitchen cabinet, and rammed my knuckle into the shelf above the shakers – there’s now a small, shallowly skinned area.

Years ago, I would laughingly say that the problem stemmed from a lack of understanding of where I end and the world begins, but that just seems ludicrous – how could you not know where you end?

After this morning’s incident, though, I’ve had a little think about why I keep colliding with things that aren’t moving, and I think I have a logical answer. Not one that is terribly flattering to me, but at this point it seems to make a lot of sense, given how much I smack into things that really, really don’t move, like walls and countertops.

I think I’m so clumsy because I consistently fail to remember precisely where things are. I’ll have a general idea of where that thing should be, but the finer units of measure are off, or maybe completely absent. So when I’m climbing into the car, I’ll think I’ve bent my knees enough, like most days, except that this one time I’ve missed bending them enough by about two centimetres, which is totally enough to make me bump my head. When I reached for the salt and pepper this morning, I again thought I should have an extra centimetre of room, and thus reached a bit too high.

For someone who’s been known to get a bit obsessive and weird over details, you’d think that would extend to knowing where other objects are in the world around me. Apparently, it does not.

Why?

Because it’s really strong. I mean, really strong. The carton has a little promotional nutritional blurb on it, and it tells you that 250 mL of this stuff is the equivalent of two servings of fruit according to Canada’s Food Guide. And that 250 mL also packs an impressive quantity of polyphenols – though apparently, not that impressive, because the number isn’t showing up in my head right now. Well. The number is, it’s 400, but I don’t know what unit of measurement is supposed to go with that number, and I’m too lazy to just get up off the couch and go take a peek in the fridge to find out.

So I figure when I’m diluting this stuff, I’m really getting about 125 mL into my glass. So that glass is one serving of fruit, with 200 insert-unit-here of polyphenols. That’s still good, right?

I presume so. It’s not changing in any event – the juice is too powerful to drink straight. Almost a bit bitter at times. The diluting also makes the drink more affordable. Healthy stuff ain’t cheap, it would seem…

I went for a haircut yesterday. Which means that I have recently known the bliss of having someone manipulate my hair around, I felt the joy of the new swing of newly shortened hair, and today I’m eyeballing myself in all reflective surfaces wondering if it’s shorter than last time (probably not) and if I’ve made a huge mistake (also doubtful).

I was actually planning on holding off on this haircut until mid March or so, but my stylist is 7 months pregnant, and late stage pregnancy can be unpredictable, so I thought I’d better play it safe and get the cut sooner rather than later. Given that she will likely have the baby in April at some point, I figured it would be a while before my next cut – she mentioned wanting to keep up part time work and not take too much time off, but I figured I shouldn’t count on her being available for several months.

So I sat down and had a think. This shorter do tends to get shaggy looking as it grows out, but during the summer months I tend to not have any contract work, which means pigtails and ponytails are totally an option for dealing with unruly hair. A plan formed – I could just let my hair grow over the summer, and in mid to late August I could see about getting a cut before starting up with real work again in the fall. Plus, this had the added benefit of shifting my haircut schedule around a bit – instead of wanting a cut in November, I won’t want another one until late December or early January, and then the next one will want to come in late April or so. This seemed like a good plan.

Turns out, though, that she’s only taking 6 weeks off after she has the baby, and then she plans to return to the part time schedule. So getting a haircut in late June or early July would have been completely doable.

Oh well. We’ll see how it goes. I may try to hold off till August anyway….

Some days, good blog fodder is just hard to come by. This is because I have a relatively ordinary, run-of-the-mill life. I have a job that provides me with a modest yet sufficient income. Mostly, I suppose I’m just one of those normal people whose existence keeps things running, but this is achieved through execution of work that is pretty much background noise for the planet.

I’m not saying I don’t like my life – I like being me a whole lot, as it turns out. I’m merely acknowledging that there may be days where things that I think are interesting really aren’t, and I’ll still blog them because I think they’re interesting, but it totally wasn’t blog fodder. If I were willing to photo document evidence of my clumsiness for the webiverse that might liven things up, but I’m a prideful, prideful girl, so there’ll be almost none of that. I have done it before, so never say never.

Today, though, when I think back on the mundane little errands I spent my day on, even I’m not that interested, so I know there’s no hope of trying to spruce it up into something bloggable. The only vaguely interesting thing is that I was presented with yet more evidence that crazy runs deep in my genetic code, and probably I am doomed, but at present I’m unwilling to share the details of what that evidence was.

Instead, imagine an exciting escapade for me. Maybe tomorrow something interesting will happen. Or something will happen that makes me think an interesting thought. Or maybe I’ll have an interesting dream. Now that I think of it, last night’s dream was pretty wacky, but the details are sort of hazy. I know there was a mystical ninja warrior princess who turned out to be a pretty ordinary looking fellow in magical drag, a Turkish assassin, and I had the ability to walk on clouds, until it started to rain, at which point I fell through. How those are all connected into a single, somewhat coherent storyline – well, as coherent as dreams ever are – is beyond me at this point though….

Tonight I watched This Is It, the documentary about what was to be Michael Jackson’s big new show.

I really enjoyed it. I like Michael Jackson’s music to begin with, and it was neat to see some of the background stuff that went into preparing such a spectacle of a performance. They had figured out some wildly impressive pyrotechnics, there was to be a ginormous LCD screen for little movie vignette-type leadins for some numbers – like Thriller – a portion of the stage was actually mounted on a cherry picker so that Michael could be raised on a little platform and then swept out over part of the audience, one number was to feature an aerialist – a dancer/gymnast twirling around in a cage-like contraption that dangled from the ceiling – and costumes with lights actually in the fabric and so many rhinestones the costume designers said they felt they needed sunglasses in creating the garment due to the sheer amount of reflected light. Apparently, Michael Jackson really liked his sparklies – in the rehearsal footage he was almost always wearing one garment that just glittered insanely. And the toast boosters! Little platforms that could be lowered under the stage, and had a ‘pop’ speed for lifting, to give the dancers standing on them an extra oomph as they popped onto the stage. Like toast popping out of the toaster.

It’s really too bad that the show never fully became a reality. Not that I would have seen it – London’s a bit far to go for a concert when one’s not exactly a die-hard fan. Still, it really would have been something. I’m glad I watched to documentary. His Vegas act would have been fun!!!

Recently, though, I’ve been presented with some evidence that makes me think I’m giving my friend credit where none is due. Not that she knows it or anything – it’s not as though I call her every time I use the phrase to report on how well it went over, and to ensure that I did not claim it as my own. Still, I’ve been rewatching Friends lately with my weekend breakfasts, and there was an episode in the second season where someone used this exact line – the owner of Central Perk, can’t remember his name right now. Larry? Harry? Anyway, he uses that line in describing how he feels about Phoebe’s music, and why he’s hired a professional musician to come play at the coffee shop instead.

Now, while I’m not sure of exactly when I heard my friend utter this phrase, I’m pretty certain it would have been after the air date of that episode. And I know she watched the show. I didn’t at the time. She never claimed that she was saying something new and funny, but she sort of let me believe that she did. I guess this is what happens when one person in a group doesn’t watch the same TV shows as everyone else.

We have officially passed the winter solstice, which means that the shortest day of this winter season has gone by. The days are getting longer now, by degrees, as we march steadily towards spring and summer.

Still, more sun doesn’t necessarily mean enough sun, which means that those folks affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder have yet to find relief, especially when the weather is uncooperative and hides the sun behind thick cloud cover for those precious few hours of daylight. I count myself lucky in that I’ve never truly felt the effects of SAD – the changing of the seasons doesn’t seem to do much to my mood or my energy levels.

That being said, a while back I was at Costco, and I noticed they’d gotten in a shipment of blue light emitters that claimed to help with SAD symptoms. Basically, what you do is position the light emitter on a table beside you so that the light is visible only in your peripheral vision, and the device is designed in such a way that it will only remain on for 15 minutes – I guess that’s a dose of light. The claim is that by dosing yourself with blue light as needed, you will find your energy levels improve.

Even though I feel okay in the winter, I was curious, and Costco has a fantastic return policy, so I grabbed one. It also happened to be on sale, which only encouraged me to purchase it.

And? Well, it’s a tough call. Like I said, I don’t notice a dip in my energy level, so when I tried dosing myself that one afternoon, I didn’t notice a surge either. Since that one trial, I’ve been sort of forgetting to keep trying the light dosing – again, because I seem to be totally fine running my days as is.

That being said, I have found a nifty feature of it that has kept me from returning it. It has a built in alarm function – you set the time you want to wake up, and the light comes on a few minutes earlier to help ease you into the wakeup process. It has a sound that it makes too – though hearing that in the morning made me want to toss the device out the window…. The light, though, is kind of nice – it does seem like waking up has been a bit less horrible lately!
