Many malls have pet stores. While I do not really desire a pet, I have been known to have a quick little walk through mall pet stores – the animals are so cute! In more recent years, having developed full consciousness of my desire to remain pet-free, I’ve stopped actually going in to the store, but I still pause to have a look at the animals they put up near the entrance to entice passersby. Usually, they’ll have some bunnies and guinea pigs on display. Fun to look at, but I’m solidly certain I do not want one of my own. Sometimes, they have puppies and kittens out. Again, fun to watch for a bit, but again, I am quite certain that I do not want a puppy. The kittens sometimes give me pause for a few moments, but reason always kicks in fairly quickly, and I leave without a furry armful to take home with me. There was a period several years ago where I really thought I wanted a chinchilla, and during this time I happened to walk past a mall pet store that had a few chinchillas on display, and walking away without one was hard.

So yes. Now, I look, I smile at the cute critters, every once in a while I am utterly charmed by one, but I’m never really seriously tempted to take one home with me.

Today, when I walked past a mall pet store, they had a hedgehog out. He (?) was a cute little guy, maybe the size of standard computer mouse? All sandy coloured quills and an inquisitive little snout, and he was active and inquisitive. I stood and watched him for about two minutes, and in that time, he snuffled about in his wood shavings, he snuffled in and out of the little log tunnel shelter thing they had set up for him, and he ran for a bit on his wheel – first in one direction, then he stopped, turned around, and ran the other way for a bit. As he ran on the wheel, you could see his little legs trundling along. The store wanted $150 for him. Goodness knows how much they wanted for his living requirements. I didn’t ask. I told myself to turn around and walk away.

I came perilously close to becoming a hedgehog owner today.

Now, how can I say perilously, when I only watched the little guy for a few minutes and then had the strength of character to turn around and walk away without hesitation?

Because many hours later, I’m still thinking about that little hedgehog….

Anyways, the surprises don’t stop!!!

Last summer, I learned that a very nice syrup for snow cones could be made by mixing up a simple syrup – a supersaturated sugar and water solution – and adding two packets of Kool-Aid drink crystals to it. So I bought some packets to try, and it worked really well.

Then, later, I realized that having those crystals on hand was a good thing for another reason – I could quickly and easily throw together a pitcher of drink. I use half the sugar the packet tells me to, and the result is pretty good – far better than plain water, at any rate.

Mostly, I had cherry flavoured crystals on hand, since I tried those first in the syrup and was completely blown away with how good it was. I bought a few other flavours to try too – some blue raspberry lemonade, some grape, some strawberry, and some tropical punch. The grape all ended up being made into drink. The strawberry became syrup, which was okay, but not as nice as the cherry – will not repeat. The blue raspberry lemonade was made up into syrup, but it was rather tart, so I won’t be repeating that one either. The tropical punch one never made it into syrup form – I sort of forgot about it.

Today, I needed to refill my drink pitcher, and reached for the drink crystals, and ended up going with tropical punch. The packet is blue. For whatever reason, I expected the crystals to also turn the drink blue – after all, cherry comes in red packets and produces red liquid, grape comes in purple packets and produces purple liquid. Thus, this blue packet should produce blue liquid.

It totally didn’t. It came out red. An orangier red than what the cherry stuff makes, but totally totally not blue.

What’s next? Green snow? (Because, you know, snow should be white, since it comes from clouds, and clouds are white…)

Anyways, speaking of Summer and light, fog is confused clouds. Instead of being up high in the sky where they belong, the clouds are down low close to the ground, fouling up visibility for those of us bound by gravity to the surface of the planet.

I remember in my younger days always being excited when I heard my father say in the morning that it was foggy outside – I had visions of this super thick mist filling the air, making it impossible to see anything that wasn’t right in front of you. Of course, I was always sorely disappointed. Sure, I couldn’t see down the street to the corner perhaps, but I could still see my friend walking about twenty paces ahead of me. I’d scuff my shoes along the ground in bad temper, feeling cheated by the unimpressive fog, and wondering what the grownups were getting all in a tizzy about. After all, I could see.

The thing is, while I may have been able to see more than I had hoped in that fog, the amount of distance a person needs to be able to see in front of them varies with the speed at which they travel. A child walking along a quiet city street? Ten feet of visibility is fine. A person driving a vehicle at freeway speeds? Suddenly only being able to see ten feet ahead of you is downright deadly. While I like to believe that I am not easily spooked off of driving, reduced visibility conditions quite reliably make me tense up behind the wheel.

A few years ago now, I was making one of my day trip journeys to Plattsburgh, NY, and coming along for the trip was a friend who had not previously been in a car with me. Just my luck, there were whiteout conditions on the highway due to blowing snow that day. Seriously. Walls of white would whip across the road, and you absolutely could not see anything in front of you. That drive was the longest drive to Plattsburgh ever, because we were just crawling along – anything faster than 40 or 50 km/h felt wildly out of control, because we could not see ahead. We made it there and back without incident though – actually, the conditions improved significantly for the trip back.

I’ll never forget the fear I felt, though, watching the road just vanish from in front of me. And I think I’ll feel that same kick of adrenaline with a tinge of despair every time I drive when visibility is poor.

Okay guys, the past month or so, I’ve found myself intrigued by gorgeous models with lots of tattoos. Now, I’d never get a tattoo myself. I’m far too fickle for something *permanent*, but I do like seeing classically beautiful girls decorate themselves with tattoos. As a flavour… something different. A few years ago – well, maybe more than a few – ambient toys became sort of popular. They’re these little plastic happy dudes equipped with a little solar sensor, which when triggered by sunlight turns gears inside that make the little guy’s head move. Being the easy prey for fads that I am, I got one – in all fairness to me, it was given to me as a gift. Mine is a monkey, clutching a banana with this look of sheer bliss on his face, and when activated by the sun his head tilts from side to side as if he’s saying, Whee, lookit me, so happy because I gots a banana! You know, monkeys don’t have the greatest grasp of English.

Now, the monkey doesn’t do anything, beyond tilting his head in the sun. I think the idea is that it’s just supposed to be a positive sort of decorative area enhancer. My father thinks these sorts of toys are plain silly. I told him they’re supposed to make you happy, and he couldn’t figure how that worked when the thing doesn’t actually do anything.

I’ve noticed though, that it does make me happy – not the sort of general Yay, cute stuff! happy – when I see that monkey’s head tilting to express his sheer simplistic joy, it makes me feel all content and peaceful. Like nothing could ever go wrong as long as a monkey has his banana.

I’m thinking I should maybe take this little guy to my office. Problem is, my office has no windows to the outside world. There’s a window to the hallway, and there’s a skylight in the hallway, though, so maybe it would still work. He might provide the little energy boosts needed to get back into a productive frame of mind when work sort of lags and stalls out. It’d be better for me than my current strategy, which is to dip into an office stash of chocolate. It might cause me to lose some social standing among my officemates, though….

If only they knew about my temporary tattoo fetish!

After nearly immolating my old little Zojirushi, I procured another for myself…..

And, well, since it’s years later and now that I’ve destroyed one I’m much less likely to destroy another, due to the memory of melting plastic that haunts me still, I went ahead and got me an upgraded model.

The new Zojirushi cooks with induction heating, which they claim makes for a more even and steady cooking temperature. It also has a wider selection of cooking modes. Where the old cooker had one mode for both white and brown rice, this one has distinct cooking modes for these types.

Now, I like steamed rice. For reasons that escape me, my parents have it in their heads that I don’t like rice, so whenever I mention to them that I have eaten or will be eating rice, there’s this stunned silence followed by an incredulous, But, you don’t like rice! I can’t seem to correct them out of this pattern. True, I don’t like fried rice. But any other rice? Bring it on.

So I had bought some brown rice, just to try, and had cooked it up on a couple of occasions in the old rice cooker. It was good, and more flavourful than white rice, but it seemed rather chewy and tough. I figured that was the character of brown rice.

As it turns out, that was incorrect. When cooked properly, brown rice is amazing. As in, I may never buy white rice again.

The new Zojirushi’s brown rice mode – not to be confused with the GABA brown rice mode, which I haven’t tried yet – takes a bit longer than white rice. It takes a little over an hour for the program to run through to completion. It’s worth the extra wait, though, because the resulting rice is tender and fluffy and more flavourful than before and really just a pleasure to chow down on. The first time I did it, I noticed right away that the rice had cooked up to a softer texture than what I had seen with the old Zojirushi, and I was worried at first – I was afraid it had gotten overcooked and was now brown rice mush. Now I know – this is what it’s like when it’s done right.

As an added bonus, the new Zojirushi plays a little tune for me when the cooking starts, and another when the cooking is done. No more harsh beeps ringing out from the kitchen – instead, you get a cute little song.

The holiday baking continued a few days ago, and another double batch of fiddly cookies emerged from my oven, smelling all wonderful. I happily filled up that roasting pan I have that I have never ever roasted anything in, but I have found it doubles handily as a cookie jar, in which case it holds quite a large number of cookies. I never get as many cookies as the recipe tells me I will – this time, I got 90, when I should have had 96.

I smiled at my overflowing cookie jar, smiling at my good cookie fortune.

And then I started packaging them up as gifts for others.

A dozen here, a dozen there, a half dozen here, a half dozen there. Before I knew it, my cookies were nearly half gone!

And I kept putting them out when people dropped by. That made the numbers dwindle even further.

So even though I baked 90 cookies, oh, the 22 or 23 of December, as of December 26, they are pretty well all gone, and I am thinking of baking up some more. Probably on Monday or Tuesday.

Anyways, I’m a few days late, but whoosh!!

And without so much as a wave goodbye, there went November, and December whizzed around the corner!

D’you realize this means that 2009 is almost done? And that 2010 is going to be happening really soon? I still remember people getting all excited about 2000!

In other somewhat related news, victory is mine! I found brandy beans at my local grocery store, on sale this week! I’d post a picture, but I want to sort of keep it my secret so I can go back and stock up one more time. I already have five boxes plenty, but really a year is a long time, so I should probably buy at least ten more boxes a little more to keep me going throughout 2010. This is not indicative of any sort of obsession addiction problem – I am merely planning for the months to come. This is foresight.

Besides – I need to go back to the grocery store one more time this week anyway. I’m on the hook to bake up a batch of cookies for a potluck shindig this weekend, and I thought I still had plenty of Skor toffee bits in the pantry, but there’s only one packet, and it was all solidified into one chunk. I smashed it around a bit, and I think they’re probably okay, but still – I’d rather have a couple of backup packets on hand then find out part way through preparing the dough on Saturday afternoon that I need to make an emergency run. I find cooking and baking turn out best when I don’t have adrenaline surging through my system.

Speaking of cooking, last night I decided to try something new and hopefully healthful – stuffed bell peppers. I found a recipe, made myself a grocery list, and went to the store. The recipe called for bulgur. My grocery store, being a rather non-adventurous sort of establishment, did not have any bulgur. I did not really feel like traipsing all over looking for bulgur – I did that once for teff flour, which was a huge exercise in frustration, as I never did find teff flour. I did find teff grain, but have yet to try grinding it in my Magic Bullet to make the flour to make injera. I digress. Long story short – I was setting myself up to make something when I did not have one of the ingredients.

Solution? Substitute couscous instead. They seem to have the same cooking requirements, so I thought it might work.

The end result? Pretty tasty, if I do say so myself, but I made it, so I might be a wee bit biased. From what my cookbook told me about bulgur, I’m guessing it would have a firmer texture than the couscous did, and introduce some mildy nutty flavour into the dish. Which sounds good, and could be really tasty with a green pepper shell – I used red pepper. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for bulgur and give that variation a try.

For some odd reason, I’ve been wanting chocolate a lot in the past few days. Rich, smooth, dark chocolate. Milk chocolate is an acceptable alternative. The chocolate could have caramel or nougat in it, but no nuts, no crunchy bits, no mint.

This is kind of oddly specific. At first, I thought it was restricted to just dark chocolate, but then I thought about Caramilk bars, and had very positive feelings, which is actually unusual for me, as I normally turn up my nose at the Caramilks in the Cadbury Halloween fun size mix. If I had any right now, I’d be inclined to eat a startling number of them. Also, those chocolate-smothered cherry cookies I made on the weekend really satisfy this urge, and those aren’t dark chocolate either. The cookie bit is chocolatified by cocoa powder. True, the chocolate smothering on top is made using semi-sweet chocolate chips – essentially dark chocolate – but this is thinned out with sweetened condensed milk and cherry juice, resulting in something more closely resembling cherry-flavoured milk chocolate.

In any event, lately chocolate has been very very good, and I keep wanting more and more. I’m on the fence as to whether I should just give in and munch away at will, or try to maintain some degree of self-control and only indulge once in a while, as a treat….

No prizes for guessing which way I’m currently leaning….

Last week, I got a copy of The Beatles Rock Band.

It’s fun, but then again, I like Rock Band. Or Birthday. Or Octopus Garden. Okay, to be honest, I didn’t know the name of Octopus Garden either, but I’d heard bits and pieces of it – in my mind, it was the I’d like to be, under the sea song.

I’m sure there are others that I just can’t remember right at this moment.

I also now fully understand the wild popularity of the Beatles – many of their early songs were darn catchy. The later songs were too, though they tended a bit more to the weird, drugged-out end of the musical spectrum. Like I am the Walrus. What were they on when they wrote that one? Goo-koo-kachoo?

Ah, Rock Band. You teach me so much, grant so many hours of fun, yet ask so little in return. I strum happily at your electronic altar.

Before anyone out there mocks me for my Rock Band devotion, know this: there are others far more obsessed than I. I know of one individual who not only has all the games, and after market instrument peripherals – you know, those fancy pants professional grade electronic instruments – but he has also fully set up his basement for the full Rock Band experience. As in, he’s got laser light effects, coloured spotlights that move in time to the music, and a fog machine installed.

Laundry. Becoming one with the couch for the past week means I haven’t touched the laundry. Now, I’ve been wearing jamamas, but there were some clothes in the hamper before I took the flu hit. Also, I think washing the towels would be an excellent idea, and I’m sort of low on socks.

Dishes. Heating up canned soup makes a pot dirty, and I’ve used up all my pots that aren’t massive Dutch ovens. I’ve been running the dishwasher pretty regularly, but it’s time to clean up those pots.

Um. That’s about it. But we’ll see how that amount of activity treats me. Hopefully, it’ll be fine, I can declare this flu officially vanquished, and resume my usual life on Friday.
