For a few days, I’d been reading a few pages of Stephen Fry’s Stephen Fry in America, which is an entertaining trip through the US, with brief stops in each state – one chapter for each state, covering a day or two’s activities. I’m enjoying the narrative, but last night I thought it might be time to give real fiction a go again. With a little help, I got some additional ebooks loaded onto the Nook, and loaded up Douglas Coupland’s All Families are Psychotic.

Now, I’ve read JPod, and The Gum Thief, and I enjoyed both of them – JPod more so – so I had relatively high expectations. I am happy to report that so far, All Families are Psychotic does not disappoint. The first page sucked me right in, and I’m really enjoying my cruise along the story of this dysfunctional family.

So when I’m climbing into the car, I’ll think I’ve bent my knees enough, like most days, except that this one time I’ve missed bending them enough by about two centimetres, which is totally enough to make me bump my head. When I reached for the salt and pepper this morning, I again thought I should have an extra centimetre of room, and thus reached a bit too high.

For someone who’s been known to get a bit obsessive and weird over details, you’d think that would extend to knowing where other objects are in the world around me. Apparently, it does not.

Tonight’s dinner? Seasoned salmon fillet, from a frozen preprepared box, baked in the oven, with homemade french fries and a little salad composed of baby spinach and sliced fresh strawberries in raspberry vinaigrette. A fairly vocal portion of my brain insists that this is a home-cooked meal, and that it is therefore wholesome and healthy. The reality is that the salmon came out of a box, so really it wasn’t a home-cooked meal, and the potatoes were deep fried, so really it wasn’t healthy.

It was all very tasty though. I still don’t think it counts as takeout….

In this day and age of widespread computer usage in all kinds of walks of life, I suspect the vast majority of people can type. So I was beyond thrilled when we started getting typing drill practice sessions at school. I don’t remember the name of the program we used – it’s entirely possible that I actually never knew the name – but I do remember sitting in that chair in front of the monstrous terminal, my back straight, elbows bent at 90 degree angles, feet resting as close to flat on the floor as I could manage, which means I had my toes touching the ground, fingers resting lightly on the home row keys, just like the image on the screen demonstrated. The drill would start, and a letter would appear in a box on the screen, and I was to press the appropriate key as quickly as I could. The program would score you based on speed and accuracy, and my classmates and I would compare our scores for bragging rights.

Those programs must be pretty effective, though, because I became a pretty competent typer. Which is good considering that now, I am practically fused with my computer – I use it for work, I use it for recreation. Not a single day goes by without me plunking down in front of the computer for at least thirty minutes. If an exceptional day prevents me from using the computer, I actually get mild pangs of withdrawal.

And I still type pretty quickly. Practice makes perfect, doncha know!!
