This means that the hors d’oeuvres (samosas and tandoori chicken) were about half an hour late. But that wasn’t the worst of it. The dinner itself - an Indian buffet - was nearly two hours late. We were supposed to eat at 7 PM. I believe the food arrived at 8:45 PM.

Now, I’m a pretty easy going person - I didn’t get upset by the lateness of the food. That being said, I strongly suspect that others did - I saw the bride and groom’s bosses pacing about antsily, looking a bit tense, and the bride’s grandfather was pretty cranky looking. Of course, he’s used to having his dinner at 5 PM, and going to bed at about 9:30 PM, so this delay was really throwing off his rhythm. To his credit, he didn’t yell at anyone, or make a scene, or even get unfriendly. But he did not look impressed.

I went to the grocery store.

I came home and put the groceries away.

This brings us to 3 PM. 3 PM?!

Even if my eyes regress and I end up needing corrective lenses again, it won’t be the same prescription as what I had before I got my eyes fixed. Plus, with the reshaping of the cornea, chances are excellent that I wouldn’t be able to wear the same contacts that I wore before. So, really, my stash of spare lenses is really, really useless.

Anyways, because I’ve been on vacation, I’ve sort of lost track of the date. I’d be pretty hard pressed to describe the grubby window through which I once viewed the world without a second thought. There are still moments where my vision isn’t clear - when I’ve been distracted away from instilling eyedrops for too long, or when my eyes get irritated by cigarette smoke, or blasting air conditioning - I think super oxygenated air might also be an irritant culprit. But the blur of dryness and irritation is not equivalent to the blur of my previously myopic eyes.

I have an eye appointment on Monday - just to check in and make sure everything is okay, though I strongly suspect that dryness is still an issue, but hopefully it’s better than it was, at least it seems better than it was - and I’m expecting to hear some instructions in terms of long term dryness management, and another follow up appointment will be scheduled after an interval of about three months, I think. Here’s hoping for good things.

Even though it’s been over a month now since I’ve had to fish a lens out of my eye, and I’m now very accustomed to being able to focus properly all the time, I still have to remind myself at night that I don’t need to remove my contact lenses. I never get very far into the act of removal - just as I’m washing my hands, I’ll look at myself in the mirror, and remember that I don’t need to take my contacts out, and a fresh wave of happiness will wash over me, and I’ll do a little happy wiggle as I rinse my hands. I hope that never goes away. I’m afraid that if it does, I might actually attempt to remove a lens from my bare cornea, and that would be extremely painful, never mind absolutely disgusting.

Will I return home to find only a smoldering heap of ashes that was once my living space, all immolated in a horrible electrical fire when the toaster/oven/cordless phone/TV/insert other device that uses electricity here malfunctioned? This one makes me want to run around unplugging absolutely everything before leaving. But that would be crazy. That also wouldn’t remove the risk - there could always be some electrical problem in the wiring in the walls that could start the destructive force of fire.

Then I start panicking about not having a home to return to. I try to take a few deep breaths before panic settles in completely, and remind myself that the more destructive of these sorts of circumstances are exactly why one has insurance on their home. I also remind myself that it’s pretty unlikely that these things will happen - I might return home to an odd smell and a long past its ripeness tomato, but it’s pretty safe to say that I will have a home to return to.

Then I feel better.

Then I start worrying about how long it takes to get rid of rotten food smell.

And even though I managed to talk myself out of full out crazy panic mode, I still hold my breath on the final approach until I’ve seen that my home still exists, I’m nervy until I’ve established that no one has broken in and stolen all of my earthly possessions, and I can’t relax until I’ve done a quick run through to establish the absence of indoor lakes…

Is it fortunate that I’ll be returning home in just a few days? I’d love my holidays to continue, but the wait might kill me!
