I went to see my optometrist today. My last eye checkup was in March 2008, and though I had had my most recent post-vision-correction check done in September 2008, I thought it would be a good idea to go see my eye doctor anyway. We are, after all, approaching my own Independence Day – July 4 is when I had my eyes surgically repaired.

So I updated the doctor about my newly corrected vision, and brought him a copy of the final report on my eyes that was done by the clinic – showing the vital statistics of my eyes both pre and post operatively. My vision was checked – 20/20 in both eyes. Awesome. There is, however, a wee bit of astigmatism, but it doesn’t require any correction. Funny, because I remember the moment during the zapping when the surgeon told me that the laser was correcting the small degree of astigmatism that had been there before. Oh well, it doesn’t really matter, because I see well now anyhow.

Then the optometrist told me that he didn’t need to see me for another two years.

Two years?

This is unheard of for me, as I’ve been obediently getting my eyes checked once a year for as long as I can remember – in the early years, it was important to make sure that my glasses were keeping up with my eyes’ decline, and then later, it was important to make sure that all was well with my contact lenses. Now that I have neither, I don’t need to be so vigilant, I guess.

It’s weird to think that I won’t see my optometrist again until 2011!!!

A notice came in the mail for me.

It was from Canada Customs and Revenue Agency. It was a past due notice for a small amount of money they determined I owed them after some refiguring of my tax information.

The thing is, I had already paid that balance – I had mailed a cheque, quite some time ago.

I logged into my bank account to check. Yup, the cheque cleared on June 12.

I looked at the notice. It said that if I had already sent my payment, I could disregard the notice, however if my payment had been more than fifteen days prior to the current date that I should call them.

I looked at the date on the notice. It said June 23, 2009.

I thought to myself, Well that’s bad news. If the cheque cleared my account on June 12, then there should be no past due notice being generated for me on June 23. June 12 is way before June 23.

So I phoned them this morning. After first getting a busy signal, then wading through the electronic menu, I finally got myself a person, who reconfirmed all the information that the electronic menu had asked me to input, and then I explained why I was calling. She pulled up my file, took a look, then confirmed for me that yes, my cheque had indeed cleared – which I already knew – and confirmed that I did not have a balance owing, and would be receiving a notice to this effect, sometime near the end of July.

Relieved, I thanked her, saying that I had been worried upon seeing the date on the notice, which was long after the money had been removed from my bank account.

Her reply?

“Well, that notice was generated on May 25, that’s why your payment wasn’t showing up in the system yet.”

So the past due notice was created in May, but wasn’t actually printed and sent until June.

Awesome…..

Today, though, I decided that pulling them out of the, to be honest, pile of crap that is on top of my kitchen table might be a baby step in the direction of sorting through and getting rid of the pile of crap. So I did a quick purge.

As it turns out, I found twelve catalogues in my kitchen. That’s right. Twelve. The kicker? I have a feeling there are more, not in the kitchen.

This isn’t the first time this hoodie has surprised me. I was packing this tee to go on a trip, and again was expecting to see the single butterfly, and was surprised to pull it out of the drawer and see the many. And it happened again when I pulled the tee out of the suitcase.

Now, Steep and Cheap displays images of the products available for sale at a given moment, and you can view the item in whatever range of colours are available. So I know I saw this tee before I bought it. I don’t think it’s the case that I saw an incorrect image.

For some reason, I have an incorrect image for this tee’s graphic stored in my head, I don’t know where it came from, and I can’t replace it with the right one.

Trying new recipes is fun. Once upon a time, I thought it would be a good idea for me to make a real effort to sift through my cookbooks – somehow I’ve accumulated a fair number – on a regular basis to find new things to try making to add to my cooking repertoire. The idea being I’d progress beyond my current standing as a moderately competent cook.

I hadn’t done it in a while. I’ve tried two in the past few days though – Friday I tried a new pasta sauce that was basically pureed roasted red peppers cooked with lots of garlic and some onion and basil, then tossed with tortellini. I cheated and bought pre-made Olivieri tortellini from Costco. The end result was quite tasty, though.

Tonight I tried another new pasta dish. It wasn’t very saucy, but it still managed to be quite flavourful – mix together some soy sauce, plum sauce, and sesame oil, set aside, then stir fry some green beans and red pepper, then cook some shrimp with some garlic, ginger, black pepper and green onion. Add back the veggies, then douse in sauce, then toss in some cooked pasta – I used angel hair pasta – and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Again, quite tasty.

I wonder what I’ll have a go at next????

While I do enjoy what I do, I don’t necessarily enjoy the actual doing of it.

Does that make any sense? It doesn’t look very clear when I reread what I’ve typed there.

What I mean is that I am happy with what I do for a living – sure, I’m given to occasional fantasies about how my life would be different if I had set myself off on a different career path, but that typically only happens when I’m thinking about an approaching deadline. I enjoy most of the activity involved in what I do, and the stuff that I like doing less doesn’t make me want to throw myself from a rooftop.

Today, though, I sat down to start in on some real slog work, and after about 45 minutes’ worth? Wow. Cleaning toilets is starting to look more appealing than slogging through all of this. The worrisome bit is the volume I have to sift through, and how much I got through in that 45 minutes. Here’s a hint – it wasn’t lots.

Am I worried? Well. Not that worried yet, I guess. I’m not panicking at this point. After all, I should be able to really grind away tomorrow and the next day, and Friday as well. Thursday I have an eye appointment, so my day is interrupted by that, but I should still manage a few productive hours.

Yuck….

Normally, I take vitamin supplements to try and make up for whatever deficiencies pop up in my typical day’s caloric intake. While I don’t think I have terrible eating habits, I do not suffer from delusions that my diet is balanced, healthy, and nutritionally sufficient. Let’s face it – I don’t eat breakfast, and lunch can be hit or miss with me. Already I’m on the negative side of balanced eating. Throw in the fact that I’m quite fond of fast food, and suddenly it makes sense that some people – those who don’t see the bigger picture of my meal planning – might wonder how it is that I haven’t yet come down with a nasty case of scurvy.

The trouble with the vitamin supplements, is I take them at dinnertime, and if for any reason I’m not home when I’m having dinner, I end up not taking them. If I’m not home for a somewhat extended period of time – say, I’m away on a little vacation – then I lose the habit of taking them with dinner, and don’t resume the practice when I try to renormalize my daily schedule.

I realize that it’s been a while since I’ve had a vitamin.

So I’m going to take some tonight.

We’ll see if I remember tomorrow!!!

It’s funny how gradual changes sort of sneak up on you.

I last had my hair cut in April – I think it was actually April 20. So, two months ago. Getting a hair cut is always a bit of a shock, unless you’re really just getting a tiny trim, in which case, the cheapo in me says why bother getting it cut at all. Hair growth, though, is so gradual that one doesn’t really notice it on a day to day basis. You wake up, and your hair seems to be exactly the same as it was the day before. My bangs help me to track my hair’s growth though – I don’t get them trimmed up between cuts, so right after a cut, they hang straight for a few weeks, then they start getting swept off to the side so they’re not poking me in the eyes. If I go long enough between cuts, they stop being bangs, because if I were to brush them down straight, they’d hit the end of my nose.

Right now, they hit just below my eyes. So I guess that means my hair has grown about an inch and a half since the last cut.

I was brushing my bangs out of my eyes the other day, and thinking, Funny, that inch and a half of growth sure didn’t make itself known in the rest of my hair.

That thought must have triggered something, because suddenly my hair seems so shaggy and unruly! Suddenly I’m noticing just how far down my neck it falls. Suddenly I’m thinking very positive thoughts about going for another cut.

I’m going to try to hold off till July. Getting a cut every two months means six cuts a year, and seems like a lot, and it adds up to be fairly expensive – $45 per cut, plus tax and tip, we’ll round up and say the whole shebang runs $60 per cut. $60 x 6 cuts a year = $360 a year.

I will try, now that I’m aware of it, not to be driven nuts by my hair’s current state, and delay the cut. We’ll see though. Last time I got a cut, it was driving me so nuts I was actually waking up in the middle of the night because it was bothering me.
