Ever since I moved out of my parents’ place, I’ve been a laptop person. Now, while the integrated touch pad is a useful pointing device when one is in transit, which happens not infrequently in my life, when I’m parked at home I like to have a real mouse. For one thing, if I have some fiddly bit of work to do, attempting to use the touch pad will leave me in a froth of frustration, and my work takes way longer to get through. For another, many of the point-and-click timewaster games I enjoy simply don’t work well on the touch pad – it takes too long to navigate the cursor to your next click.
So I have a wireless mouse. I’ve had it since, oh, 2005? It’s been around these parts, working faithfully, for quite some time. It runs off AA batteries, so whenever those die out, all I have to do is pop in some new ones and we’re good to go again.
Except, for the past week, things seem different. When I click, it doesn’t seem to always register. There have been a couple of incidents where I clicked, and for some reason two clicks registered – both times I was just playing a little timewaster game, so nothing critical happened in the grand scheme of things. Still my mouse’s performance has been somewhat spotty.
I’m wondering if it’s time for me to replace this mouse… I do like new stuff….

Ignorance is bliss, right? I also go kind of loosey goosey with the measuring of the butter – Canadian butter does not come packaged in 5 tbsp sticks, so I lop off a bit more than what I think is a quarter cup (50 mL) off the 2 cup brick.
I cooked up some whole wheat spaghetti.
Topped the pasta with the sauce. Added a slice of grocery store-made garlic bread. Ta da! Dinner.
I think what I like about this tomato sauce recipe – other than I think it’s delicious, that is – is the fact that there are only three ingredients to make it, and they are all things I tend to have on hand no matter what. I buy the tomatoes in bulk. I try very hard to always have butter. I try very hard to always have onions. It’s pretty rare for me to be out of any of these. Which means that, as long as I have some pasta on hand as well, I will always have a meal.
Even if the meal is lacking in meat and green vegetables. But hey, it’s got tomatoes and onions! Those count for something, right?

It’s now been just over a month, and I have yet to be contacted as the grand prize winner. I think that now it is safe to say that I did not win the house.

Thinking she was worried about the machine sitting in a landfill forever, I pointed out that she could take it somewhere to be recycled, or somewhere where they would figure out a way to fix it up and make it useful, though probably not super nice, for someone who needed it but really wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it. She said, yeah, she knew about those sorts of programs, and that was what she was going to do, but she still didn’t feel right about it. It really bothered her that when something goes wrong with a laptop, often the most cost effective solution is to replace it.
I’m not bothered by this, but then again I have what is likely an unhealthy appreciation for new things. The way I see it, if technology is able to change quickly enough that I notice a difference in performance between a new laptop today and a laptop that was new two years ago, so much the better if the upgrade is affordable. I use my computer every single day – might as well be happy with it!
Or maybe she’d just see me as part of the problem.

I’m deadlining. Again. For the first time, though, I’m feeling weirdly tired before the big push. As if the knowledge of the upcoming long hours and possibly late night hauls is weighing on me.
I mean, I got plenty of sleep last night, slept in rather blissfully this morning, I worked a few hours on the project today, and I am feeling rather zonked. I’ve been awake less than fourteen hours, and I want to go to bed. So rather than try to stay up and push through a bit more tonight, I’m just going to give in.
