In this day and age of widespread computer usage in all kinds of walks of life, I suspect the vast majority of people can type. I remember doing little typing drills at school when I was younger, and I took a typing and word processing class when I was 15. So I was beyond thrilled when we started getting typing drill practice sessions at school. I don’t remember the name of the program we used – it’s entirely possible that I actually never knew the name – but I do remember sitting in that chair in front of the monstrous terminal, my back straight, elbows bent at 90 degree angles, feet resting as close to flat on the floor as I could manage, which means I had my toes touching the ground, fingers resting lightly on the home row keys, just like the image on the screen demonstrated. The drill would start, and a letter would appear in a box on the screen, and I was to press the appropriate key as quickly as I could. The program would score you based on speed and accuracy, and my classmates and I would compare our scores for bragging rights.

Those programs must be pretty effective, though, because I became a pretty competent typer. Which is good considering that now, I am practically fused with my computer – I use it for work, I use it for recreation. Not a single day goes by without me plunking down in front of the computer for at least thirty minutes. If an exceptional day prevents me from using the computer, I actually get mild pangs of withdrawal.

And I still type pretty quickly. Practice makes perfect, doncha know!!

The carton has a little promotional nutritional blurb on it, and it tells you that 250 mL of this stuff is the equivalent of two servings of fruit according to Canada’s Food Guide. And that 250 mL also packs an impressive quantity of polyphenols – though apparently, not that impressive, because the number isn’t showing up in my head right now. Well. The number is, it’s 400, but I don’t know what unit of measurement is supposed to go with that number, and I’m too lazy to just get up off the couch and go take a peek in the fridge to find out.

So I figure when I’m diluting this stuff, I’m really getting about 125 mL into my glass. So that glass is one serving of fruit, with 200 insert-unit-here of polyphenols. That’s still good, right?

I presume so. It’s not changing in any event – the juice is too powerful to drink straight. Almost a bit bitter at times. The diluting also makes the drink more affordable. Healthy stuff ain’t cheap, it would seem…

In any event, eventually it was all done, and I breathed a sigh of relief, followed by a solemn promise to myself – I would not go through this again. For the 2009 tax year, I would sort out my contributions early, and get them done early.

How’s that working out, you might ask?

Well.

Today is February 25.

I have yet to make my 2009 year’s contributions.

Everything’s all set up now – I should be able to do it all online, quickly and painlessly, right???

And I thought, Gosh, I should really eat those soon.

And then I realized that they’ve been sitting on the shelf, with the bags open like that, for months. Probably since last summer.

At which point, I took a deep breath, picked up all the sad leftovers bags, and unceremoniously pitched them. I’m not about to eat them after they’ve spent so long stored in non-sealed packaging. Stale chips are gross. They shouldn’t taste like peanuts. Forget it. Chips aren’t too pricey. I can get more.

And then, you know, not eat them.
