My nifty new Nook has a powersave mode with screensaver. Part of my flossing problem has been that whenever I run out, I keep forgetting to buy more. Shamefully long stretches of time can go by with me not flossing simply because I can’t. Then, once I remember to restock, it takes me a bit of time to get back into that habit – because, after all, my teeth didn’t fall out while I wasn’t flossing, so maybe my super duper toothbrush is able to pick up some of the slack.

Well. No more of that kind of logic. Flossing every night. Gingivitis, consider yourself on notice.

I’m still super pleased I dodged the drill, though. Here’s hoping for more good news at my next appointment, which I’ve already scheduled, for December…

Okay guys, it’s been a while since I’ve posted a gallery from here… They have a unique shooting style. Sort of a fisheye lense, coupled with direct lighting, and then a bit of photoshop smoothing. I have been away from the parental nest for quite some time now, yet I am nowhere near an accomplished cook. I rely on takeout and prepackaged food far too much, and for reasons unknown, any time I have to expend some preparatory effort to get food on my plate it counts in my brain as a home-cooked meal, even when no actual cooking takes place. Sandwiches, for example. There’s totally no cooking involved in a sandwich, but if I make myself sandwiches for dinner I still think it counts as a home-cooked meal, and should not be counted as takeout. I also have it set in my head that home-cooked meals are automatically healthier and better for me than takeout.

Tonight’s dinner? Seasoned salmon fillet, from a frozen preprepared box, baked in the oven, with homemade french fries and a little salad composed of baby spinach and sliced fresh strawberries in raspberry vinaigrette. A fairly vocal portion of my brain insists that this is a home-cooked meal, and that it is therefore wholesome and healthy. The reality is that the salmon came out of a box, so really it wasn’t a home-cooked meal, and the potatoes were deep fried, so really it wasn’t healthy.

It was all very tasty though. I still don’t think it counts as takeout….

And yes, it does fit my gargantuan wallet – I checked before I bought it. And yes, that means I was doing a bit of a suspicious looking manipulating in the store – pulling the stuffing out of the display bag, pulling my wallet out of my handbag, slipping the wallet into the display bag, then pulling it out again and tucking it back into my handbag. Rather shifty looking. Still, I don’t think any of the clerks noticed – there were two or three other women in the store trying on shoes. Sandal type shoes. In their bare feet. Ick. No wonder I keep turning to video games to escape. If things get to be too much for me, I can pause things and recalibrate myself. Or if I fail, I just hit that lovely Retry button….

In late November 2009, Coach mailed me a little postcard that offered me 25% off any purchase. I used it to acquire a new wallet, which I also still love to bits.

So I have a handbag I love. I have a wallet I love. My needs have been met with great satisfaction.

Still, I very recently received yet another 25% off postcard from Coach. I looked at it, and thought, Well, I don’t need anything, and turned to toss it into the recycling pile.

In this day and age of widespread computer usage in all kinds of walks of life, I suspect the vast majority of people can type. I remember doing little typing drills at school when I was younger, and I took a typing and word processing class when I was 15. I did know how to type by then, and I did know how to use a word processor – had been using one for various school projects for several years at that point – but in the interest of full and honest disclosure, I took that class because I wanted an easy A. I was exposed to computers pretty early on – my father had an interest in these magical electric computational boxes, so we had one at home for tinkering pretty early on. I remember being totally mesmerized by his typing – he could go at lightning speed! Me? I would have to hunt down each letter and poke the key with my index finger. One. At. A. Time.

So I was beyond thrilled when we started getting typing drill practice sessions at school. I don’t remember the name of the program we used – it’s entirely possible that I actually never knew the name – but I do remember sitting in that chair in front of the monstrous terminal, my back straight, elbows bent at 90 degree angles, feet resting as close to flat on the floor as I could manage, which means I had my toes touching the ground, fingers resting lightly on the home row keys, just like the image on the screen demonstrated. The drill would start, and a letter would appear in a box on the screen, and I was to press the appropriate key as quickly as I could. The program would score you based on speed and accuracy, and my classmates and I would compare our scores for bragging rights.

Those programs must be pretty effective, though, because I became a pretty competent typer. Which is good considering that now, I am practically fused with my computer – I use it for work, I use it for recreation. Not a single day goes by without me plunking down in front of the computer for at least thirty minutes. If an exceptional day prevents me from using the computer, I actually get mild pangs of withdrawal.

And I still type pretty quickly. Practice makes perfect, doncha know!!
