I’ve noticed recently that t seems to me that good habits are particularly hard to get into and easy to lose, whereas bad habits are easy to pick up and stick with you with unusual persistence.

We all have bad habits – lots of them. One of mine that I wish I could do away with is the habit of swabbing my ears with a Q-tip after a shower. I don’t stick it very far in my ear, and I don’t apply a lot of pressure – I just sort of lightly swish it around to soak up any water kicking about in there. I know I’m not supposed to do this – it even tells me not to on the Q-tip package – and yet I keep right on doing it. I’ve been doing it for years and I just. Can’t. Stop.

Even worse, a couple of years ago I heard a story about a guy who also had this habit, until one fine day the cotton tip of the Q-tip came off in his ear. His attempts to retrieve it caused it to become lodged deeply within the ear canal, and it ended up requiring surgery to remove it – they had to cut the back of his ear and go in from behind! O.o

So now, whenever I’m swabbing out my ears, I think of this story. And I worry about whether that cotton tip is going to come off. And I make sure I check the tip for any signs of weak attachment before beginning. O_o

But will I stop? Apparently, no. ^_^
