So, not much to my surprise, it turns out that I am a gambling wuss. I refuse to play table games because these typically have a $10 minimum bet, and I just can’t wrap my head around the idea of losing $10 to a single hand. This means that I am pretty much destined to never win big. Hopefully, it also means that I will never lose big.

Since the best I can manage at table games is nervously eyeing them from the sidelines, this means that I have spent the bulk of my casino time at slot machines. Naturally, I have only eyeballed the high limit slots, only to stumble away in fits of laughter at the thought of throwing $100 at a single slot spin. I breeze right past the $5 slots. I hesitate in front of the $1 slots, but I think I only tried one. Once. I lost.

You might be thinking at this point that penny slots are my idea of a gambly good time. You’d be wrong. The reason being, a person has to win really big to make a penny slot win worthwhile. A person can get a good spin, have the machine dinging and ringing and the credit number stacking higher and higher, until finally you look at the total, do a little mental math, and realize that you’ve won $3. Bah! Hardly a thrill.

What about nickel slots? Well, I played a few of these, but the problem I’ve found is that they tend to be a bit more complicated than I want. Yes, I realize that slots are about as uncomplicated as any game can get – you put money in, push a button, and wave goodbye to your money, unless you’re lucky, in which case you might get a bit back. Nickel slots, however, seem to always involve a little more – they’re all set up so that you can set how many paylines you want to activate on your spin, and then the bet you place is based on how many nickels you want to wager per payline. Okay, maybe that’s not so complicated. It is deceptive, though – a person could sit down at a nickel slot, plug in $5 thinking that this will entertain them for a good long while, but then place the maximum bet on all playlines for better payout, and burn through the money in a hurry since typically a maximum bet is nine lines at $0.25 per line. 9 x $0.25 = $2.25 per spin. So much for your good long while of entertainment. So, no, nickel slots are not my favourites.

What do I play then? Quarter slots. The non-deceptive, straightforward, put your money in and hit a button to spin the reels sort of games. After spending my first evening of gaming at the Wynn playing for longevity – which means a single credit to a win, which means any wins I got would have been the smallest payouts possible for the spin of the reels – I switched my strategy to a two-quarter-per-spin angle, which was quickly followed by placing maximum bets wherever possible, which wiffles back and forth between two and three quarters per spin, depending on the machine. Yes, I know the odds of winning are pretty terrible on slot machines. Whatever – I get entertainment for far less than $10 a pop.

And, even though the payouts are not as spectacularly huge, I am happy to report that I’ve had a bit of luck on my side periodically in my gaming journeys. A bit of luck, paired with my aversion to massive loss – the moment that I hit a payout that is more than what I put into the machine, I cash out, redeem my coupon, and typically exit the casino for a while. Or, at the very least, switch into spectator mode. Oh, and I usually decide in my head how much I want to fetter away at a given machine before I sit down, pull the cash out, and then put my wallet away. That night at the Wynn? I signed up for their player’s club card, which came with $10 of free slot play money, minus $1 that I had to put in to get the ball rolling, and managed to win $32.25. The next night, at the Venetian, I did the same player’s club drill for $15 of free slot money, but only managed to win $3, which I kept playing to try to get a bigger win. It didn’t work out. But, I didn’t put any of my own money into the machine. I think. I may have put in a single dollar at one point to see if my luck had turned. It hadn’t.

At the MGM Grand, I didn’t get any free money, and I haven’t been very diligent about tracking how much money I’ve put in, but I think I’ve managed to come out ahead. Like I said, once I get a win that puts me ahead of what I plunked in to start, I cash out and walk away. And I don’t keep feeding machines if they refuse to give me a win. Except for that Winning for Dummies machine. I fed that thing $10 and got nothing. I don’t want to consider what that means about where I land on the Dummy scale. Much to my distress, the $2 I put into the Playboy machine didn’t get me anything either. In spite of those losses, though, I still think overall I’m ahead. No big wins, but a little win here and there with minimal small losses is fine by me!

Now that I’ve written this, I’m a little embarrassed. Maybe tomorrow I’ll screw up my courage and try ‘Casino War’ for $5.
