Okay guys – time for more Brea Bennett!! And this is her having fun! Enjoy!!
So the dentist was today… I put on a brave face and went. I actually didn’t get to see my regular dentist – he was away – so I saw the other dentist in that office. The hygienist took x-rays, scaled my teeth – which is always long and odd-feeling – then polished and flossed them. I asked how they looked, and she said that there didn’t seem to be an unusual amount of tartar buildup, but my gums had bled a bit while she was scaling, which she said was a cause for concern, and I should make sure when flossing that I’m really getting under the gumline. Then the dentist came in, peered at the x-rays, then poked around in my mouth a bit. He expressed concern about a deep cavity I’d had filled two or three years ago – it might continue to haunt me by requiring a root canal. O.o
But then he finished up with a surprise – my teeth are cavity free! ^_^
That proclamation seriously made my day. ^_^ I mean, really, with my track record, and having gone two years without a checkup and cleaning, and I have no cavities? That’s amazing! I wish I had had my regular dentist – he would have been so happy and proud of me!
So to what do I owe credit for producing this oral health miracle? Indeed, you may be wondering what I do that you can also do to reduce your chances of facing the drill on your next visit to the dentist. Here’s my oral hygiene routine, and by golly, I’ll be sticking with it! ^_^
Morning: Brush teeth – I use a Sonicare electric toothbrush and Colgate Total whitening toothpaste – not explicitly for whitening purposes, it was the gel version of Colgate Total that I was able to buy at Costco. My toothbrush has a timer, so I brush each quadrant of my mouth for 30 seconds – outside of bottom teeth, inside of bottom teeth, outside of top teeth, inside of top teeth. Spit toothpaste foam, do not rinse mouth with water. Brush tongue.
Night: Floss teeth – yup, I floss before I brush. A hygienist suggested I give it a try. Brush teeth, just like in the morning. Rinse mouth with water. Rinse mouth for about 60 seconds with Oral B antibacterial mouthwash with fluoride. Do not rinse mouth again, and do not drink anything for at least 30 minutes after – not that that’s an issue, if you’re going to bed!
In addition to that, I try to take a calcium supplement every day with dinner, though if I’m away from home it doesn’t happen. Also, the mouthwash I use comes in a bottle that I don’t trust to close in a leak-proof when traveling fashion, so I don’t use it when I’m away from home on holidays or whatnot. Beyond these circumstances, though, this is exactly what I do to try to take care of my teeth. How gratifying to find out that it’s actually worthwhile! ^_^
