Anyways, because I’ve been on vacation, I’ve sort of lost track of the date. I usually know what day of the week it is - usually - but the actual date has been relatively unimportant, in spite of the fact that various shows and events have been importantly tied to certain dates. My computer, however, has been ever vigilant of the passage of calendar days, and in looking at the date just now, I’ve realized something.

It has been over a month since my vision correction. A full month, free from the tyranny of lenses.

Sometimes, I marvel a little at how quickly I’ve forgotten what exactly the world looked like through my uncorrected eyes. I’d be pretty hard pressed to describe the grubby window through which I once viewed the world without a second thought. There are still moments where my vision isn’t clear - when I’ve been distracted away from instilling eyedrops for too long, or when my eyes get irritated by cigarette smoke, or blasting air conditioning - I think super oxygenated air might also be an irritant culprit. But the blur of dryness and irritation is not equivalent to the blur of my previously myopic eyes.

I have an eye appointment on Monday - just to check in and make sure everything is okay, though I strongly suspect that dryness is still an issue, but hopefully it’s better than it was, at least it seems better than it was - and I’m expecting to hear some instructions in terms of long term dryness management, and another follow up appointment will be scheduled after an interval of about three months, I think. Here’s hoping for good things.

Even though it’s been over a month now since I’ve had to fish a lens out of my eye, and I’m now very accustomed to being able to focus properly all the time, I still have to remind myself at night that I don’t need to remove my contact lenses. I never get very far into the act of removal - just as I’m washing my hands, I’ll look at myself in the mirror, and remember that I don’t need to take my contacts out, and a fresh wave of happiness will wash over me, and I’ll do a little happy wiggle as I rinse my hands. I hope that never goes away. I’m afraid that if it does, I might actually attempt to remove a lens from my bare cornea, and that would be extremely painful, never mind absolutely disgusting.
