In my experience, when registering for a conference, you get a name tag and a little folder that has an abstract booklet, a schedule, and maybe some helpful information about the area… restaurant suggestions and such.
Imagine my surprise when, upon registering this morning, I was handed a large beige and red canvas tote with stuff in it! Most of the contents were promotional mumbo jumbo for the university, but the kicker was a stainless steel travel coffee mug! And the name tag wasn’t a sticker… wasn’t a pin… but was one of the nice ones that hangs around your neck, only it was extra nice because it’s a lanyard with a plastic clip for the name tag at the end – so one could remove the tag and use the lanyard for, say, keys or something. Unfortunately, the tag hangs a bit low on me – so people have to look to the region of my bellybutton to see my name. If only I was a little bit taller!
Also, the dye they used on the tote bag isn’t very nice, and rubbed off on the seat of my pants a little bit while I was hauling the tote around today – so there’s a bit of pale red smudging on one of the back pockets. I hope it comes out in the wash. I guess it just gives people an excuse to look at my ass!
