It’s fun learning the words to songs sung in languages you don’t speak. I have a mix CD in my car that has the song Boten Anna by Basshunter on it. It’s in Swedish. I don’t speak Swedish. I don’t understand Swedish. This language has never appeared on my list of languages that I think I might like to learn. Yet there it was on the CD, so when it came up in the rotation, I’d listen, because it’s catchy and I like it. After a few repetitions, I started trying to sing along a little. A few more repeats, and I could muddle my way through the chorus. Still more repeats, and I could flub my way through pretty well the whole song.
Now, I’m not claiming that I sound Swedish when I sing this song – I’m certainly making huge mistakes and butchering the lyrics along the way. But given that I know zero Swedish, I’m surprised I’m able to remember any of it. We’re talking about learning phonetic sequences only here. No meaning based clues as to what’s coming next.
More recently, I saw the video for Beliy Plaschik by t.A.T.u. I like the song. It’s in Russian. I don’t speak Russian. I don’t understand Russian. But I want to be able to sing this song, in Russian.
Time to make a new mix CD for the car….
