I probably should have saved this until it was closer to vacation time!! I’m taking a hard earned break away from school, and going with my family to Disney World at the end of April!! It’s going to be SO FUN! Although, to be honest, I’d much rather go some place tropical, to spend my days sitting on the beach, drinking lightly alcoholic drinks and reading some entertaining novels… It’s been far too long since I’ve been able to spend a few hours a day reading anything that’s not academic…

Hello kaori, it’s been a long time since I posted something but there’s something I’d really like to know your opinion about.
I was wondering if you’ve heard of a book written by the feminist Ariel Levy called: ‘Female chauvinist pigs: Women and the rise of raunch culture’. Ariel Levy was on the Oprah show quite a while ago to comment on the phenomenon of women seeing and preseting themselves and other women as sex-objects. Levy’s premise is that women present themselves as objects who are only there to serve the lust of men. While men used to do this in the old days (as ‘male chauvinist pigs’), according to her women have taken over this role (as ‘female chauvinist pigs’). She sees things as “girls gone wild” dvd’s and women visiting strip-clubs as symptoms of this new phenomenon whereby women present themselves as willfull sex-objects.
Hmmm, I hope that was all clear, but I’d like to know what your views are on this.

Joris: I actually haven’t heard of that book - and personally, I think she’s just trying to use sensationalism… I believe girls are finally realizing the effect they can have on men, are becoming a little more aggressive and individual, and in general - just having more fun!
I don’t think they’re presenting themselves and others purely as sex objects, except when they WANT to be thought of as sex objects…. and that really, if men could get away with it, they’d do the same
