Friday, I took a trans-Atlantic flight. It was long, and I am fully intrigued by the nifty little pods that are available in first class – they recline fully into little beds, and they allow for a greater degree of separation between passengers. Very futuristic looking. At any rate, not being a person who can afford first class flights, I hunkered down in economy class, where I was surprised to be served not one, but two meals – I was expecting a beverage-only type of setup, but I suppose when you’re on a plane for seven hours you can expect a bit more. My plan had been to sleep a fair amount of the flight, but true sleep eluded me – I think I was only asleep for thirty minutes in total.
Not sleeping was okay though – because, for the first time ever, I was going to Paris.
I should have been completely exhausted upon arriving, but I was just too excited. I’ve seen pictures of Paris, and footage of Paris in movies. I was about to stumble my way through the real thing!
I did crash out for a nap once I got into my hotel room – about four hours. When I woke up, evening was setting in, around 5 PM local time, and I went out for a little walk in the surrounding area. There was a brief rainshower – I think it was raining for about five minutes total – and a bit colder than I would have liked, but I got to wander past narrow little streets of very stereotypically French apartment buildings – tall, about five or six stories tall, white plaster walls, narrow floor to ceiling windows with shutters, some with ornate cast iron railings over the bottom half or third of the window to give the impression of a balcony, in spite of there being none.
I bought fresh baguette from a little boulangerie on one of these narrow roads. It was so fresh, it was still warm – almost hot – from the ovens. Om nom nom nom! One for munching Saturday, one for Sunday morning. Nom!
