Anyways, I’m in glasses today. This is because I have an appointment for a consultation for corrective eye surgery on Thursday, and they say I need to not wear my contacts for 48 hours prior to the appointment, and I’m trying to be extra safe and give it 72 hours.

I’d forgotten how much I despise wearing glasses, though it may be that the problem could be corrected simply by getting new frames – I got these ones when I was 15, which was quite some time ago! Since getting contacts at the age of 13, I hardly ever wear my glasses, so it shouldn’t be terribly surprising that my frames might be a bit dated at this point.

I’d also forgotten that when I put on glasses after not having worn glasses for a while, I get fishbowl vision – I remember this from when I would get brand new glasses. The whole world appears to slope away from me in all directions. It makes walking a bit interesting, walking down stairs more interesting. I’d also forgotten how bumping your glasses up and down can make the world go all crazy shaky.

Today I watched the little informational DVD the eye centre sent me, and quite frankly, it didn’t contain much information beyond what was available for reading on their website, which I did read. I’ve got a couple of questions, and they were kind enough to provide me with some space for writing these down on a form I’m to return to them, so I know I won’t forget to ask.

That being said, last night I casually mentioned to my parents that I was doing this, and this morning my mother phoned all concerned. You see, Mum had a problem with macular degeneration a few years ago – basically, she started getting a hole in her retina. It was dry, so less severe and repairable, and she went in for surgery to have her retina patched up. Knowing she was nervous about surgery, never mind surgery on her eye, she requested a general anesthetic – she didn’t want to be conscious while all this was going on. I’m a little fuzzy on the details at this point, but basically she went in with the belief that she was going to be fully knocked out for the procedure when that wasn’t the case. They did a local anesthetic, and they did it by injection (ack!), so she saw the needle coming at her eye, and then afterwards she was able to see surgical tools coming at her eye. She freaked out about those, and then later had the delightful experience of hearing the surgeon mutter, “Well this isn’t going well.” She told me afterwards that she could see these dark pools gathering in her field of vision, and then the surgeon would come in with a tube and they would go away, and then they’d come back, and she knew that they were pools of her own blood. It was pretty traumatizing for her. So not surprisingly, she was less than keen about me going in for any sort of elective surgery on my eyes – at the very least, she wanted me to make sure that no needles were involved in the procedure, and if there were, then I should go out and find another clinic.

I reassured her, then watched the video in the hopes that I hadn’t just lied to my mother, and was happy to learn that they use anesthetic drops before surgery. No needles. In fact, the video said “No needles” about five times, so I’m pretty convinced there will be no needles.

So now, I wait patiently for Thursday – or maybe not so patiently, since I’m stuck in my hideous glasses till then. Might be a good opportunity to lock myself in and get some work done – constant squinting sucks a lot of the fun out of cavorting in the summer sunshine….

Yuck…
