Anyways, speaking of sticking things where they don’t belong, I went for another eye checkup today. The verdict? Still dry.
They actually did a dryness test on me. They took these little strips of paper, bent them, and then stuck the ends inside my lower eyelids. I then kept my eyes closed for five minutes, while the papers absorbed the tears my eyes would produce. My eyes were numbed during the test, by the way, so the results would reflect normal, unirritated tear production.
The left eye produced way more tears than the right eye. Only the tip of the paper that had actually been under my eyelid was wet on the right hand side. One the left hand side, sufficient moisture had been produced to spread along the strip for a bit.
But still, my eyes are way dry.
The nice thing about today’s visit was the doctor I saw was the one I saw on my very first few appointments. She said today that she suspects I’m having an allergic reaction to something, and prescribed me some medicated drops to help with that. I mentioned that she had been leaning that way before but subsequent checks with other doctors had dismissed the theory, and she said that there were other signs of allergic reaction in my eyelids that made her reconsider the allergy hypothesis. I asked if what she was seeing could also be due to the dryness test they’d done, and she said no, what she was seeing was more than what the test causes.
She also said the pattern of dryness going on strongly suggests that I don’t actually close my eyes all the way when I blink them, and that I actually sleep with my eyes open just a wee bit. Which would also explain why I wake up with miserably dry feeling eyes. Creepy…
So this is what I need to work on - closing my eyes!
